AFTERCARE
INFORMATION

HEALING BASICS

Every healing process is different, impacted by

your individual body, diet, climate, and lifestyle.

Consistent aftercare and not touching, twisting, or interfering with the natural healing process ensures a positive healing experience. Your body was designed to heal itself. Help it along by following the guidelines and aftercare instructions given to you now and recommended by your piercer in store. Please contact us with any questions or concerns.

The stages of healing

A body piercing will go through three main phases of healing. During each phase, the piercing will look and act different. “Aftercare” focuses on the first two phases, where the piercing is prone to infection or irritation. Any kind of trauma to the piercing could see it take steps back in these healing phases.

INFLAMMATION/
ACCEPTANCE PHASE

You may experience soreness, swelling, heat, bruising and bleeding as your body tries to reject the piercing. Infections are common in this stage, it is important to downsize your jewellery once all swelling has subsided to avoid irritation.

HEALING/CRUSTY
PHASE

Your piercing(s) will be discharging fluids as it makes new scar tissue and forms the important fistula around the jewellery, the piercing is still prone to infections at this stage.

MATURATION/SEASONING
PHASE

Piercing will have no discharge, no tenderness, you can change your jewellery as infection is unlikely. Good quality jewellery should be used until the full healing time is reached.

PLEASE DO NOT:

DO NOT treat your new piercing without first washing your hands with warm water and soap. Touching your piercing with unclean hands will inevitably introduce bacteria to the open wound.

DO NOT touch, twist, pick at or play with your new piercing. Any twisting or turning you do to your jewellery can irritate your piercing and rotate bacteria from your environment into your healing tissue.

DO NOT use chemicals or any type of ointments on your piercing, as they will cause irritation and prolong healing time. This includes rubbing alcohol, peroxide, methylated spirts or other harsh chemicals.

DO NOT submerge your piercing during the initial healing process. This includes pools, baths, and hot tubs, to avoid exposure to infection- causing bacteria. (The sea is ok, but clean afterwards)

DO NOT remove your jewellery yourself. If you need to take out your jewellery for a medical procedure, come by the shop and one of our piercers will do it for you. We can also fit retainers.

DO NOT listen to your friend’s advice over our professional advise. Please call us or visit the shop, we have heaps of experience and want to help.
